James Baird Gallery
Founded in 1989 as a regional gallery on the East Coast of Canada, James Baird Gallery has cultivated a strong foundation of national and international artists through its close ties to an artist residency program established concurrently with the gallery.
Over nearly three decades, the gallery has curated hundreds of exhibitions at its Newfoundland location, as well as at public institutions, commercial spaces, pop-ups, and art fairs across North and South America and Europe. Focused on contemporary painting in its many forms, the gallery operates by one guiding principle: only buy what you love.
Our HistorY
James Baird Gallery began in 1989 in downtown St. John’s, Newfoundland, with a mission to bring the work of local artists to a global audience.
Through the creation and operation of the Pouch Cove Foundation—our visual artist residency located just north of the city—we’ve developed strong relationships with many nationally and internationally recognized artists.
In the years since, we have produced numerous solo, group, and themed exhibitions at our own gallery, in venues across Canada, and at events throughout the United States, South America, and Europe.
Our work extends beyond traditional exhibitions. We’ve collaborated with guest curators, organized pop-up events, hosted juried shows, published monographs and books, participated in site-specific installations and performances, helped launch other galleries, and worked in many capacities to support the artists and collectors we serve.
