Amanda Reeves’ colourful yet subtly nuanced abstract paintings invite the viewer to engage in the slowed contemplation of looking. With meticulous preparation, the varied layers of acrylic wash stand as a visual ground for the precise geometric shapes overlaid. The desire to secure the paintings in focus is thwarted by their bright colours and tonal shifts; the floating and popping effect of the flat painted shapes confuses their spatial relationships and the layers become indistinct.

Reeves’ interest in this series of abstractions is rooted in her fascination with color and pattern. Since graduating with honours from Ontario College of Art & Design University in 2005, Reeves has participated in numerous exhibitions. Her work is in the collections of the Bank of Montreal, Royal Bank of Canada, Medcan and Cenovus Energy amongst others. Amanda was born in England, raised in Canada and now lives and works in the San Francisco Bay area.
